A Harry Potter Halloween

It was the month of August and these kids were already planning what they wanted to dress up as for Halloween 3 months away!

The Harry Potter bug hit many of these readers and so they wanted to dress up as a favorite character!  Even, us parents got to play in the fun!

Front row--  Hedwig (Brianne),  Doby the House Elf (Seth), Cho (Janet), Gabby De'lcure (Amber) Fleur Delcure (Delaney), Draco Malfoy (Liam)  2nd Row-- Harry Potter (Jared), Hermione Granger (Clarissa), Hogwats student (Beryl), Luna Lovegood (Cailin) Mrs. Weasly  (Vicki).  3rd row--Professor McGonagal, (Christine), Hogwarts student (Mikayla) Professor Trewlaney (Jen), Professor Snape (Chris).

We had so much fun one Saturday afternoon traipsing through a couple of Goodwill's or other thrift stores and costume shops looking for just the right piece of clothing for our character!

Such a cute Hedwig the Owl!

History Fun--Walk Like an Egyptian

We are now in the Dispensation of Abraham....and that mean we're learning all about Egypt!
We spent time learning about the beginnings of Egypt, and guess what we learned that it's all in the Book of Abraham of the Pearl of Great Price.

We learned about their writings and created some ink using poke berries and wrote our names using their hieroglyphics.

We learned about the Nile River and it's life giving properties to this desert land....We built our own Nile River and then "flooded" it to see if the grass seed would grow.  It did!

flooding the river....

this river is quite damp....that was one really big flood!

IT GREW!!!

And this one is growing too.....

We spent time to discuss Joesph and his time in Egypt,  how he was placed where he was to bless his family during the 7 year drought.
We learned about their clothing, furnishings, art and architecture  culture too.  Here they are making a necklace...to walk and dress like an Egyptian.

Our timeline.....from the Creation and Fall in the Garden to the Egyptians

We learned that the Egyptians were educated and gained great knowledge.  We  know this through their writings, buildings (Pharos Lighthouse, and the Pyramids) and the scriptures.  We know that they were well versed with astronomy, mathematics, engineering.  They had libraries and were known for the excellent schools (Acts 7:22)

At the end of our unit study of Egypt we took a trip to Roanoke's Science Museum to look an exhibit on Tutankhamen--King Tut, from the last era of ancient Egyptian history.  Plus,  we had a dinner featuring all sorts of yummy Egyptian food and personal projects presented by each of the kids.  Liam loved learning about Pharos Lighthouse and Delaney shared with us the heritage of knowledge that Egypt had.
