We spent this past week reading the book The Runaway Bunny by Margret Wise Brown with pictures by Clement Herd.
We worked
We played a shadow matching game. Liam and Delaney also worked on a stick puppet show--a retelling of the story.
I created this fun paint stick sequence chart with velcro tabs. Each page of the story had a picture that depicted what happened. Using his memory, Liam would put back in order the story. From this he learned about ordinal numbers and sequencing.
The illustrations were both done in pen and ink and full color. For art and science we talked about color. What the primary colors are, and how they are combined to make the secondary ones. We then learned about white light and how it's really made of all the colors of the spectrum...or rainbow. They have been watching many videos from the "Magic School Bus" series. We found one about light and enjoyed a show watching Ms. Frizzle teach her students all about the rainbow and colors.
We spent a bit of time with different shapes that were found in the book. We investigated that what we call "round' can be a disk, sphere or circle...oval or ellipse. For lunch one day we created a yummy disk...pizza!! Oh so healthy, whole grain crust with olives (another disk or sphere!), peppers from our garden and ham.
I couldn't help myself...this little one sure is cute!! I sure do love the time I spend with all my little ones...and big ones too....so what are they up too? More to come on all their school learning.
As I was preparing to row through this book with Liam, I was once again over come with peace and happiness that this literature based program was indeed the way that the Lord wants me to help the "littles", (Delaney and Liam) to learn this year. Last year Barry gave me a blessing because I was -- (gasp*)--stressing about schooling and life and....well anything else I could think of. Barry claims I have the market on stress, I've perfected the art of stress quite well....far more than anyone else he's ever seen.....anyway, I'm always thinking that what someone else is doing is super wonderful...and I try to duplicate it. What actually happens is that I rarely complete anything and our schooling is varied and a hodgepodge of hit and miss activities and plans. In the blessing I was told that my children's needs will be different from what other do.
I've taken this to heart. I've prayed to find what program would be best beneficial for my little ones needs and this plan, the Five in a Row plan is what kept coming to me. I admit, there were times when I strayed and looked into following another plan (namely Sonlight), but when I had faith and followed the inspiration that the Lord gave me to use this program, I once again became peaceful and happy...and so, once again I had this wonderful affirmation that I was on the right track for my little Liam. I still enjoy hearing about what others do...that's where great ideas come from. I certainly don't come up with all these fun activities on my own. However, I'm striving to not jump at every wonderful thing that comes my way. To follow through with my inspired plans and have faith that in the end all will work out well!
