Discovering Family Roots

As far as known history among the family, the first Hales came from Kent England. They first settled in the New England area, however around the mid 1700's moved to what is now known as Grayson County, in the area of Elk Creek. The patriarch of the family, Lewis Hale with his wife Mary raised a large family. Lewis was also a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He and his family were well respected by the community.

These gates mark the entrance of the Hale cemetery that was founded in 1802. With in the cemetery are the graves of Lewis and Mary and many of their children and kin.
Stephen Hale was the son of Lewis Hale and a veteran of the war of 1812.

Lewis and Sherry Hale live in Greenfield Massachusetts, they are our cousins. Lewis's father Marshall, left Virginia as a young man during the years of the great depression. He settled in Massachusetts and raised a family there. When Lewis and Sherry visited, it was our first opportunity to meet them. It made our family feel more complete. Their visit was what sparked this whole trip. We sure have enjoyed getting to know them and hopefully we can head north and visit more of their extended family (and ours) one day.
This is a large smelter furnace that is located in the old neighborhood that my father grew up in. The house is no longer standing. The furnace was used to melt down iron ore that was brought from the strip mines. Once it was melted from ore into "pig iron" it was transported to other locations.
The mining company used trains and ore cars to transport the ore down to the smelter. This structure was a engine house, used to house the train engines.
This is a better shot of the smelter. As seen here it was larger than any I have seen in the area. Iron ore was common throughout this area. During the Civil War, much of the iron, lead, and saltpeter used by the Confederacy came from this area and the surrounding counties.
There never was a more beautiful flower grace these headstones as this little one. She had a blast crawling around in the grass. Anytime outside the van was counted as a good thing.
Delaney was the perfect helper for the day. She was great with Brianne and Liam. She knew how to keep them happy. She also makes a very beautiful flower in this old cemetery
