For the past few weeks I've been wanting to start a writing program with Delaney, something to introduce some basic concepts of composition. As I was cleaning out some folders I found a copy of a program called Four Square. I learned about this apporoach at a workshop and tried with the older kids years ago. I dusted off the pages, looked up more info about it on the web and watched a you tube video of a 1st grade class somewhere doing it. It looked like fun...so we created some four square pages too.

We looked through old magazines for pictures we liked. Afterwards we sorted them into similiar topics and glued the pictures down on a sheet of paper with the four square grid drawn on it.

We had fun tearing, cutting, gluing, sorting, organizing and classifying the similarities of the pictures. These are the topics we came up with....pets, bugs, transportation (Liam found a picture of a bus and just had to include it--so we looked for more vehicles we use as means of transportation.), nutritious food, and both of their favorites--desserts!
Liam likes the school bus? That's my boy!!
