Visiting Moores Creek, a Revolutionary War Battlefield Site

Out and about....after we spent some time at the lighthouse, Southport and then refreshed ourselves with food and air conditioning, we headed off to Moores Creek Battle field.   Again, this was a free site to explore but, seeing how we're studying the 1650's- to the 1850's we thought this would be a perfect stop to jump start our history schooling.
What's really neat is that unbeknownst to me, this site parlayed into a wonderful lesson conserning the vision and plans we (my other homeschooling mom/friends and I) planned for our school year.

We want help build spiritual bridges of history events and how they relate to the gospel--either a gospel principle, but mostly how an event relates to the bringing of the restoration of the gospel or the bringing forth of Zion.

This area was quite swampy...with lots of mosquitos :(   At one time these swamps were home to alligators!

Not a happy camper....he just wanted to go home...and I mean home, not the beach house.

What was especially serendipitous with this history site is that the whole battle was fought over this bridge--well, the one that was here 300 years ago--but the importance of who had control over the roads and bridges were very apparent to us as we learned about the battle that occurred there.  We learned that this battle wasn't against the Red coats and Patriots, but Tories vs Patriots--a bit of a
civil war before the big one happened.

We also learned that due to the win of the Patriots over the much larger Tories army this event inspired the leader of the North Carolina colony to give their Constitutional Convention delegates the go ahead to say "yes" and sign the Declaration of Independence.  They became the first colony to sign this document.  I wonder if this helped inspire South Carolina delegates to sign, as they were very hesitant due to slavery issues....which is an entirely different discussion-- one I won't address here!

Liam loved to climb and touch this cannon and swivel gun.

Soo cute........and play fighting boys....after all this talk of war, they just couldn't keep from acting it out!

These pictures didn't have a thing to do with this trip, they are just from a wonderful night out playing putt-putt topped off with yummy ice cream cones.
