Little House in the Big Woods

Delaney and I are reading "Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingles Wilder.  We couldn't let such a good yummy book...as we had many wonderful readings of detailed accounts of the foods they made and ate, go without us making some of them too.
Our first food to make was butter, but who can enjoy such a great treat as homemade butter without a little wholesome whole grain wheat bread to go with it. Sooo, we made some bread first.
They really enjoyed the kneading part of the process.
Next we started in on the butter making.
While we shook and shook and shook, rolled, and rolled and rolled our jars of cream we watched Heidi. The kids got bored with the shaking, rolling and movie.  We also agreed that we don't like the Shirley Temple version of Heidi.

The final products...
 ..and now for the eating!

Creamy homemade butter.  The final verdict?   Cailin gave a thumbs down to real butter. (I remember that this was my opinion as a child too.)   Delaney and Liam were undecided. Me, I liked it, I guess I've got adult taste buds now.:)
....as for Brianne...she only got the bread, and it made her quite happy!!
Now we're on to the next book in the series....Little House on the Prairie.
