This may be a mathmatical celebration day and....it's also Albert Einstein's birthday, but in our home it's more a day of culinary quest and feasts. According to Connor, Einstein's birthday is probably the 2nd most celebrated birthday ever...with all these reasons, what respectable science or math geek can disregard such a scrumptious day.
We gathered at the Brame's for different pies and a little bit of math fun.
I cheated and made "impossible pepperoni pie" I usually try to make a pie crust (not an easy thing for me to do) but this year I chickened out and went the easy way out with bisquick!
Grandma Beryl explained what pi is--how the 3.14 comes to be. She used a dinner plate and string. She showed the girls that the diameter of the plate will work out to be the same as three times around the plate, plus a little bit more (the .14 part).
Then we had the older girls pick a pie and measure the diameter. Cailin chose the pumpkin pie. Beryl chose the spinach quiche. Cailin's pie had a diameter of 9.9. She then found the radius of the pie by dividing the 9.9. With that number she plugged it into the formula of piR2 = area. She also found the circumfrence. She's not fond of math, but I think she kinda had fun doing this...put I doubt she'll ever let it be known, but she did have a smile on her face when she got it to work. I also think having the calculator helped.
After eating it was time for outside play time. Brianne loved this. It was on the warmish side if the wind was blocked. Brianne found this cozy little nook to play with these rocks, moving them back and forth from one cup to the other.

Just hanging out in Beryl's room
and playing outdoors in the sunshine! What a wonderful way to celebrate 3.14 day! Happy Pi day Everyone!!
A picture Cailin took while driving home.
At home, Connor took these little phyllo mini cups and made these little tarts of pudding. I helped him write out the first 15 numbers of pi in chocolate frosting. Everyone in the family enjoyed eating these...except Delaney who was now down with the yucky stomach bug that Liam had already got and others were soon to get. :(
